Cetinje Commemorates Liberation Day Amid Historical Reflections

On November 13, Cetinje marked its Liberation Day with a solemn ceremony at the Memorial Ossuary. The event saw the mayor of the Capital City of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković, alongside the President of the Assembly of the Capital City, Milena Vujović, and the President of the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War and Anti-Fascists of Cetinje, Borislav Pravilović, laying wreaths to honor the city’s historical significance.

During his address, Mayor Đurašković emphasized the importance of this day, stating that it unites their memory, pride, and commitment to future generations. He highlighted that Cetinje has long been a home to fighters, intellectuals, poets, and patriots who contributed to the vision of Montenegro as a land of free and proud people.

“It is during the darkest times, notably in the Second World War, that the spirit of Cetinje was most vividly expressed,” Đurašković remarked. He acknowledged the bravery of the citizens who stood alongside the national liberation movement, determined to defend honor and humanity against oppression.

Unfortunately, he noted that there is a growing trend to rewrite history, referencing the erection of monuments dedicated to those who served foreign interests while undermining ideals of freedom. “Cetinje remains loyal to its roots and antifascism, defending the values that have defined the essence of Montenegrin identity through the ages,” he asserted.

In a spirit of honoring this rich history, the city plans to collaborate with the Federation of Associations of Fighters of the National Liberation War and Anti-Fascists of Montenegro to erect monuments dedicated to the Battle of Košćela and to honor 49 national heroes. This initiative aims to serve as a lasting reminder of the struggle for freedom and the courageous individuals who confirmed it through their actions.

After more than eighty years, the city is committed to repaying its debt to those who fought for the freedom enjoyed today, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten.

President Borislav Pravilović of the Association of Fighters echoed these sentiments, stating that today also serves to remember the 49 national heroes from the Cetinje area and the title of National Hero that this city proudly carries. He expressed that the commemoration goes beyond honoring the past; it reaffirms their commitment to the values of freedom, justice, solidarity, and human dignity.

“Our responsibility is to safeguard these values and pass them on, especially in times when courage and understanding are needed more than ever,” Pravilović noted. He emphasized that Cetinje has shown resilience throughout history, affirming that while setbacks may occur, the spirit of perseverance prevails.

As part of the commemorative activities, a wreath was also laid at the grave of the Unknown Soldier near the Vlaška Church, further paying tribute to the sacrifices made for the cause of freedom. The events of the day not only remember the past but reinforce a collective commitment to building a better, fairer, and more dignified society.
