Flamengo has dismissed coach Filipe Luís following a significant 8-0 victory over Madureira, which secured the club’s place in the Carioca Championship final with an aggregate score of 11-0. Despite this impressive win, the decision to part ways with Luís comes amid a challenging start to the season for the Rio de Janeiro club, marking their worst beginning in a decade.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, shortly after the match that showcased Flamengo’s potential. Nonetheless, the team has struggled considerably, having lost the Brazilian Super Cup title to Corinthians and faced elimination against Lanús in the South American Recopa. Currently, Flamengo sits in 11th place in the league standings, accumulating only four points from their first three matches of the season.
In an official statement, Flamengo said, “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team.” The club also confirmed that assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares would be leaving alongside Luís. The statement expressed gratitude towards Luís for his contributions, stating, “Flamengo thanks the former player and coach Filipe Luís for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and good luck in the continuation of his professional career.”
Filipe Luís, 40, joined Flamengo as a player in 2019 and quickly became part of a successful era, helping the club secure ten trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores. He transitioned to a coaching role in 2024, leading the team to an impressive record of 64 wins in 101 matches, with only 15 defeats. His tenure saw Flamengo clinch the Brazilian Serie A title, the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Carioca, and the Brazil Supercopa in 2025.
The decision to relieve Luís of his duties follows increasing speculation about his future, particularly after he signed a two-year contract extension with Flamengo in December. In light of this sudden turn, Flamengo has initiated the search for a new head coach, with former Cruzeiro manager Jardim reportedly in consideration for the position.
As Flamengo looks to rebound from a rocky start, the club’s management hopes to find a suitable replacement who can restore the team’s competitive edge and guide them back to success on both national and international stages. The coming weeks will be crucial as Flamengo aims to regroup and reestablish itself as a dominant force in Brazilian football.
