The renowned Macedonian darkwave band Mizar has released a new single titled “Vardar e Stiks” on January 2, 2024. The song features lyrics by lead vocalist Niko Đorgievski, who collaborated with founding member Gorazd Čapovski on the music, arrangement, and production. Accompanying the single is a music video directed by Aleksandar Ristovski Princ.
This release follows a successful concert held on September 20, 2023, in Ulica Slobode, as part of the Podgorica Cultural Summer. The event attracted several hundred attendees, primarily from the younger and middle-aged demographics. Mizar opened their performance with an adaptation of Psalm 135, followed by popular tracks such as “Devojka od bronza,” “Magla,” “Gradot e nem,” and their latest song “Grozomora.”
Live Performance Highlights and Band Legacy
Audience members were particularly captivated by the powerful and resonant voice of Niko Đorgievski, which echoed through the Trg nezavisnosti with the strength of an operatic tenor, the depth of Orthodox chanting, and the energy typical of a dark metal band. This unique blend has solidified Mizar’s position as pioneers of a distinctive musical expression in the Balkans.
Founded in 1983, Mizar has undergone numerous transformations over the decades. The lineup has changed multiple times, with members departing and reuniting. Despite these shifts, Gorazd Čapovski, the composer and guitarist, has remained a constant force in the band. Their music draws inspiration from ancient Slavic chants, Macedonian folklore, and Byzantine traditions, all enveloped in a dark and gothic aesthetic. Mizar has released seven albums to date, establishing a significant presence in the regional music scene.
The release of “Vardar e Stiks” marks another milestone in the band’s storied history, further showcasing their dedication to evolving while remaining true to their roots. As they continue to captivate audiences, both old and new, Mizar’s influence on the darkwave genre and the broader cultural landscape in Macedonia remains undeniable.
