The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed starting left tackle Broderick Jones on injured reserve following a neck injury sustained during last week’s game against the Chicago Bears. The 2023 first-round draft pick is expected to miss a minimum of four games, sidelining him until at least Week 17 of the NFL season. This development comes as the Steelers prepare to face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
In Jones’ absence, Andrus Peat will take over the left tackle position, providing protection for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Peat’s starting role on Friday, highlighting the importance of solidifying the offensive line against a formidable Bills defense. Peat, who joined the Steelers during training camp, has primarily been practicing at guard but previously made 12 starts at left tackle for the New Orleans Saints in 2023.
Peat expressed his readiness for the challenge, stating, “I’m always ready to play or start. I’ve been a starter most of my career, so I always try to prepare like that and keep myself in that mindset.” The Steelers will need Peat’s experience, especially as they navigate a season where Rodgers, at nearly 42 years old, is currently dealing with a fractured left wrist.
Defensive Adjustments and Roster Changes
The Steelers also announced the elevation of cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. from the practice squad ahead of the game against Buffalo. This move positions the 2021 second-round pick to make his season debut, adding much-needed depth to a secondary that has faced injuries to starters Joey Porter Jr. (hip) and Darius Slay (concussion).
Samuel, who signed with the Steelers’ practice squad on November 11, 2023, after undergoing spinal fusion surgery, expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the field. “I feel great,” Samuel remarked shortly after his arrival in Pittsburgh. “It’s the healthiest I’ve ever been. I dealt with it, and I got it fixed, so now I feel good.”
As the Steelers prepare for this critical matchup, the loss of Jones represents a significant challenge for their offensive line. Their ability to adjust and protect Rodgers will be pivotal in their quest for a successful season.
