Students Celebrate Resilience in Novi Sad with Epic Welcome

Thousands of students converged in Novi Sad on October 31, 2025, to commemorate the first anniversary of a tragic accident at the local railway station that claimed the lives of 16 individuals. This event marked a significant moment for students across Serbia, who gathered to pay tribute and celebrate resilience.

The celebration began with a remarkable welcome for students arriving from various cities. A notable group, comprised of hundreds of students from Novi Pazar, completed a journey of over 300 kilometers on foot, taking 16 days to reach their destination. Their arrival was met with an overwhelming show of support from local residents, who gathered in the streets, waving flags and chanting in unison.

A Historic Journey and a Heartfelt Welcome

As the students entered Novi Sad, they were greeted by thousands of citizens brandishing torches, setting off fireworks, and cheering loudly. The atmosphere was electric, with chants of “Pumpaj!” resonating throughout the streets. This phrase, meaning “Pump it up,” became a rallying cry for the students as they celebrated their accomplishment.

In a gesture of solidarity, students from Novi Sad presented their peers from Novi Pazar with certificates of appreciation. The certificates bore the message: “For every step you took in the fight for freedom. Steps of remembrance. Without division, love is resistance.” This heartfelt exchange underscored the unity among students in the face of adversity.

Additional festivities unfolded as cyclists from Bačka Palanka, Belgrade, Niš, and Užice joined the celebrations. In a touching moment, Daris Šuković proposed to his girlfriend, Džejla Ahmetović, on the Freedom Bridge, adding a personal touch to the event.

Commemorating the Past and Advocating for Change

Students in Belgrade also showed their support, calling on citizens unable to attend the gathering in Novi Sad to assemble at 11:52 a.m. the following day. They aimed to block intersections near the Faculty of Law and the Agricultural Faculty as a means of honoring the memory of those lost in the tragic accident.

This event not only served as a poignant remembrance of the victims but also highlighted the collective spirit of the student community in Serbia. It was a powerful reminder of their shared commitment to fostering resilience and advocating for change in their society.

As the night unfolded, the sense of solidarity and hope among the students served as a beacon of strength for the future.
