The government in England has introduced a new streamlined process to facilitate the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints. This initiative is expected to significantly benefit households by potentially saving drivers over £1,100 annually. The changes apply to both public and private chargepoint installations, aiming to make EV ownership more accessible and cost-effective.
Nearly 80,000 public chargepoints are currently operational across the UK, with one new chargepoint being installed approximately every 29 minutes. This expansion ensures that EV drivers are consistently close to available charging options. By reducing the complexity of paperwork, more homeowners with driveways will find it easier and quicker to install private chargepoints, allowing them to charge their vehicles at home.

The recent planning changes also extend to workplace and public chargepoints. Businesses will benefit from a faster and more affordable installation process, which is crucial for increasing the overall number of public charging stations. The advantages of switching to electric vehicles are compelling, as highlighted by the Labour Party. Operating an EV can cost as little as 2 pence per mile, making it a financially attractive option for many drivers. Additionally, the government noted that the prices of EVs are decreasing, with two in five used models now priced under £20,000 and 29 new models available for under £30,000. Most of the latest EVs offer a range of nearly 300 miles on a single charge, sufficient for long journeys such as from London to Newcastle.
Patrick Dunne, Chief Property and Procurement Officer at Sainsbury’s and Managing Director of Smart Charge, expressed strong support for the new regulations. He stated, “Everyone at Smart Charge knows how important it is to make EV charging simple, reliable and accessible – both to make transport cleaner and to ensure we’re meeting the everyday needs of drivers throughout the UK.” Dunne added that this streamlined approach will significantly accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across the nation.
