The Police Service Commission (PSC) has initiated a plan to recruit 50,000 new police officers in Nigeria, following a strategic meeting with key stakeholders. Attendees included representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Ministry of Police Affairs, and the Federal Character Commission. The meeting aimed to establish a transparent and credible recruitment process grounded in principles of fairness, equity, and merit.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the PSC, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), emphasized the Commission’s commitment to an inclusive recruitment strategy. He stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity and diversity of the Nigeria Police Force. Representing Argungu, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), who chairs the PSC Standing Committee on Nigeria Police Force Matters, echoed the need for collaboration to maintain the integrity of the recruitment process.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya, expressed optimism regarding the recruitment plan and assured ongoing cooperation among participating agencies. According to Torty Kalu, the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, key resolutions from the meeting included a strict adherence to the Federal Character principles. This approach aims to ensure equitable representation from all states in Nigeria.
Further commitments were made to promote gender inclusivity, with a focus on encouraging qualified female applicants to participate in the recruitment process.
