Sony Doubles Down on Franchises, Leaving Uncharted in the Shadows

Sony has significantly intensified its focus on established franchises, raising questions about the future of the beloved Uncharted series. The gaming landscape has increasingly shifted towards leveraging intellectual property (IP) with proven success, as studios are hesitant to invest in new ideas amidst soaring development budgets. This trend is particularly evident within PlayStation, where several studios are prioritizing popular titles that have already demonstrated financial viability.

Among the standout franchises, Horizon Zero Dawn has made a substantial impact, selling over 40 million units across its games. Following this success, Guerrilla Games is set to release a multiplayer spin-off, Horizon Hunters Gathering, with a continuation of the main series anticipated as well. Similarly, Naughty Dog, known for its creative storytelling, is pivoting to a new IP with the upcoming title Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while still capitalizing on the success of The Last of Us, which has surpassed 40 million units in sales.

The God of War franchise, another cornerstone of Sony’s portfolio, has sold over 76 million units. The recent Norse-themed titles have reinvigorated interest in the series, resulting in a prequel spin-off, God of War: Sons of Sparta, and plans for a trilogy remake. The enduring popularity of this franchise demonstrates Sony’s commitment to maximizing its most successful series.

Despite the success of other franchises, Uncharted appears to be sidelined. While the series enjoyed significant acclaim, with over 41 million units sold across four main titles, it has not seen a new game release since the remaster of previous titles on PlayStation 5. This is particularly striking given that Uncharted was a flagship series for PlayStation during the PS3 and PS4 eras. Following the release of a movie adaptation, which performed adequately at the box office, the franchise has not seen a similar commitment to game development.

There are suggestions on how Sony could reinvigorate the Uncharted brand. One possibility involves focusing on Cassie, the daughter of Nathan Drake and Elena, as the new protagonist. Exploring her adventures could introduce a fresh perspective while retaining ties to iconic characters. Another idea is to develop a prequel featuring Victor “Goddamn” Sullivan during his earlier days as a treasure hunter, potentially set in the 1970s to offer a nostalgic twist. The success of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which highlighted Chloe Fraser, further indicates that the franchise can thrive without Nathan Drake as the central character.

The absence of new Uncharted titles raises questions about Naughty Dog’s willingness to allow other teams to develop projects within the franchise. While the studio has a strong attachment to the series, Sony holds the rights to the IP, leaving the door open for potential new directions. The market’s appetite for content from established franchises suggests that there may still be hope for Uncharted to reenter the spotlight.

As PlayStation doubles down on its most popular series, the fate of Uncharted remains uncertain. While there is potential for new adventures, the franchise currently lacks the momentum seen in others like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn. Fans and commentators alike are left to ponder whether Uncharted will receive the attention it deserves, or if it will remain a nostalgic memory in the expansive universe of PlayStation.
