Tata Motors and Mahindra Secure Major Vehicle Exports to Indonesia

Indian automotive manufacturers Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have successfully secured significant export contracts from Indonesia, marking a substantial achievement for the Indian auto industry. Tata Motors will supply 70,000 vehicles, while Mahindra will deliver 35,000 Scorpio Pik Ups. These vehicles will enhance rural connectivity and farm logistics as part of Indonesia’s national cooperative programme.

Both contracts are with Indonesia’s state-owned enterprise Agrinas Pangan Nusantara. Tata Motors is set to deliver its largest-ever international order, just days after Mahindra announced its own significant deal. The vehicles will be delivered through PT Tata Motors Distribusi Indonesia, the company’s wholly owned subsidiary in the region.

Strengthening Rural Infrastructure

The vehicles ordered by Tata Motors include 35,000 units each of the Yodha pick-up and the Ultra T.7 truck. These vehicles are expected to facilitate the movement of agricultural goods, making it easier for farmers to transport their products from rural areas to markets and storage facilities. The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s Koperasi Desa and Kelurahan Merah Putih Project, which aims to strengthen village cooperatives and bolster food security.

Asif Shamim, Director of PT Tata Motors Distribusi Indonesia, stated, “This order reflects the continued acceptance of Indian commercial vehicles in international markets and the confidence of customers in their ability to operate reliably across diverse conditions.” He emphasized that this contract will play a vital role in enhancing rural connectivity and improving the livelihoods of local communities.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s contract also plays a crucial role in Indonesia’s rural development initiatives. The company will supply the Scorpio Pik Ups for use in the same national programme, with deliveries scheduled for 2026. Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of the Automotive Division at Mahindra & Mahindra, remarked, “By deploying the Scorpio Pik Ups as a part of the Koperasi, we are strengthening a reliable logistics backbone that connects farmers to markets more efficiently.”

Impact on Indian Automotive Exports

This recent collaboration positions Indian automakers as significant players in Indonesia’s transport modernization efforts. Mahindra’s order is particularly notable, as it exceeds the total volume of its exports for the financial year 2025. Gollagunta highlighted that the delivery of the Scorpio Pik Ups, which will be manufactured at Mahindra’s Nashik plant, is designed to perform well on rough rural roads and farm tracks while maintaining low operating costs.

The combined efforts of Tata Motors and Mahindra signal a growing acceptance and demand for Indian commercial vehicles in Southeast Asia. With both companies winning substantial contracts, they are poised to contribute significantly to Indonesia’s rural infrastructure and economic development.

As the Indian automotive sector continues to expand its footprint internationally, these contracts not only enhance trade relations between India and Indonesia but also bolster the potential for future collaborations in various sectors.
