Belfast Retailer Praises Congestion Cuts Ahead of Christmas Rush

UPDATE: Key changes to Belfast’s traffic management are boosting retail confidence as the city gears up for the Christmas 2023 shopping season. Retailer Chris Suitor of Suitor Bros Clothiers and Custom Tailors reported that congestion improvements are making a significant difference for shoppers.

Speaking to Belfast Live earlier today, Suitor highlighted the positive impact of initiatives from the Department for Infrastructure and Translink. After last year’s chaotic traffic conditions, which Suitor likened to “someone threw a hand grenade” at the city, current measures are proving effective. The reopening of Durham Street and an earlier moratorium on roadworks have played a crucial role in easing congestion.

“This year has definitely kicked off on a better keel than last year regarding congestion,” Suitor stated. The reopening of Durham Street and the minister’s support for the Keep Belfast Moving campaign have been vital. He noted the moratorium on roadworks began two weeks earlier this year, which has positively influenced shopper accessibility.

Despite ongoing challenges, Suitor expressed optimism. “The mood music at the minute is very positive for the city,” he said. “We need to plan our journeys, avoid yellow boxes, and utilize public transport where possible.”

Retailers are feeling the difference, with Suitor reporting an uptick in foot traffic compared to last year. “Customers are saying they’re finding it easier to come into town,” he added. The combination of better transport options and a buzz around the city is encouraging more people to shop locally.

However, Suitor also stressed the need for continued improvements in public transport. “We need more funding to enhance our public network,” he urged, calling for greater investment in Northern Ireland’s business community. He believes the year-long pilot scheme for late-night transport could be a “gamechanger” if embraced by the public.

“The late-night buses and trains are a good news story for Belfast,” Suitor asserted. “We need to use it or lose it. If we don’t demonstrate demand, it may not continue.”

As the holiday season approaches, retailers are hopeful that enhanced accessibility will translate into increased sales. Suitor remains committed to working with authorities to ensure that public transport continually evolves to meet the needs of the community.

With just weeks left until Christmas, the focus is on maintaining positive momentum. As traffic conditions improve, Belfast’s retailers are gearing up for what they hope will be a successful shopping season.
