UPDATE: Two burglars who preyed on vulnerable elderly residents in Blyth have been sentenced, sending shockwaves through the community. Margaret Brown, 40, and her partner Matthew Thain, 34, were convicted for their heartless scheme of posing as window cleaners to gain access to the homes of unsuspecting elderly women.
In a chilling series of events on June 10, 2023, the duo targeted an 84-year-old woman, claiming Thain was her actual window cleaner’s son. After convincing her to let them in, they stole cash and personal belongings. The elderly lady’s purse was later found missing, along with £130 in cash.
At Newcastle Crown Court, authorities revealed how Brown engaged the victims in conversation while Thain went into the kitchen, creating a diversion. Their tactics escalated when they approached an 86-year-old woman, who unwittingly offered them cash for window cleaning and lawn care. While inside her home, they further manipulated her kindness, with Thain asking to use the bathroom, allowing them both access to the house.
When the victim’s children arrived, they confronted the duo, prompting Brown and Thain to flee. However, swift action from the victim’s son led to their arrest shortly after, demonstrating the community’s resilience against such predatory behavior.
Brown was sentenced to 29 months in prison. Judge Gavin Doig condemned their actions, stating they sought to exploit the kindness of elderly victims. He acknowledged Brown’s remorse but noted her history of prior offenses, including 20 convictions for 48 offenses dating back over a decade.
Thain, who has also been sentenced, received a harsher term of three years and six months in prison for his role in the crimes. Brown’s defense highlighted her previously clean record prior to her relationship with Thain, indicating a concerning change in behavior.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the elderly and the urgent need for community vigilance. Officials encourage residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods immediately.
As of now, Brown is incarcerated at HMP Low Newton and aims to start anew following her release. The court also imposed an indefinite restraining order to protect the victims from further harassment.
