Celtic’s Martin O’Neill Rules Out Kyogo Furuhashi Return Amid Transfer Talks

UPDATE: Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed that a return for striker Kyogo Furuhashi to Parkhead is “unlikely” as the forward focuses on proving himself at Birmingham City. This news comes as the Premiership champions engage in talks with the English club regarding a potential loan deal for the Japanese star, who previously thrived in Glasgow.

After a disappointing stint at Rennes last January, where he struggled to find the net, Furuhashi has only scored once since transferring to Birmingham this summer. O’Neill expressed concerns that the player, who enjoyed immense success at Celtic with four league titles and five national cups, is determined to make his mark in England.

“I would have said that [a move] would probably be unlikely,” O’Neill stated. “I think everything’s premature. I think there is a viewpoint that he wants to really prove himself at Birmingham.”

O’Neill, who recently returned to Celtic to replace Wilfried Nancy, is actively seeking new signings to bolster his squad as they face a competitive title race. With Rangers surging ahead after their midweek win over Aberdeen, moving three points clear of Celtic, and Hearts leading by six points, the urgency for reinforcements is palpable.

“We’re doing plenty of work on it, seriously,” O’Neill added. “I think that we are well aware that we have to supplement the squad.” He emphasized the need for immediate action, saying, “I think it will be crucial…the other two clubs will see this as an opportunity to bolster their squads.”

In addition to Furuhashi’s situation, O’Neill addressed speculation regarding Celtic captain Callum McGregor, who may be targeted for a move to Saudi Arabia to reunite with former manager Brendan Rodgers. O’Neill stressed McGregor’s importance to the team, declaring, “If you’re asking me, would he go in this transfer window, that would be a major shock. A major disappointment for me.”

As the transfer window heats up, all eyes are on Celtic to see if they can make the necessary moves to remain competitive in the league. Fans are eagerly awaiting news on signings and potential exits as the clock ticks down on the transfer window.
