URGENT UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in Whitby, North Yorkshire, where an elderly couple, David Jeffcock, 80, and Susan Jeffcock, 74, ended their lives by jumping from a cliff following a devastating cancer diagnosis. The couple’s heartbreaking decision was confirmed during an inquest held today, November 24, 2023.
The couple, once residents of Sheffield, relocated to Whitby after retirement, fulfilling a long-held dream. Just weeks before their tragic deaths on July 30, 2023, they communicated their intentions to a solicitor in a letter, which was revealed during the inquest. The letter outlined their plans to end their lives, driven by the pain and suffering caused by Mr. Jeffcock’s bone cancer diagnosis.
Kevin Shepherd, Mr. Jeffcock’s nephew, shared profound insights at the inquest, stating, “I was shocked to hear of their passing and in such circumstances.” He emphasized the couple’s deep bond, noting that Susan chose to join David, highlighting their unwavering devotion to one another. “That to me shows their devotion,” he said.
On the morning of July 30, a passerby discovered a mobile phone and jacket at the cliff’s edge, prompting immediate investigation. Upon looking over the edge, they spotted two bodies on the rocks below. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, with their bodies subsequently airlifted by the Coastguard helicopter. The cause of death was determined to be multiple traumatic injuries.
Details from the inquest revealed that Mr. Jeffcock had visited the A&E three times earlier that year, dealing with acute headaches and shortness of breath. The police investigation highlighted a significant decline in his health, leading to the unfortunate decision to end their lives. Detective Inspector Jenkinson stated that it appeared Mr. Jeffcock may have jumped first, with Susan possibly hesitating before following him. A jacket weighed down with a brick was found as a possible marker, indicating premeditation.
Coroner Jonathan Leach recorded a conclusion of suicide for both individuals, noting that neither had a history of mental health issues, although Mr. Jeffcock faced several physical health challenges. This deeply saddening case raises awareness about the emotional and psychological toll of terminal illness on families.
