UPDATE: The body of Erica Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete, has been tragically recovered from the ocean south of Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz after a suspected shark attack. The grim discovery was confirmed by her father, James Fox, who revealed that rescue teams located her body around 2 PM on Saturday, December 29, 2025.
Fox was reported missing on December 21 while swimming with fellow members of the Kelp Krawlers, a recreational swim club she co-founded. Eyewitness accounts indicated that she was mauled by a shark while swimming near Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, approximately 30 miles from where her body was found.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, with Sheriff’s Offices from both Santa Cruz and Monterey counties involved in the case. While James Fox confirmed the identity of the body, Sergeant Ryan Farotte stated that official identification has not been completed yet.
Witnesses reported seeing a shark breach the surface with what appeared to be a human body in its mouth, sparking immediate alarm among the swimmers. One member of the Kelp Krawlers recalled that when everyone returned to shore, they realized Erica was missing. “I just felt numb,” said fellow swimmer Sharon Carey. “I was hoping that maybe she got out of the water and then decided to walk back.”
Initial search efforts included boats, helicopters, and divers, but were called off after approximately 15 hours. However, independent search teams, including Bedrock Ocean Exploration and Angel’s Recovery Dive Team, continued looking for Fox until her body was ultimately retrieved by Cal Fire personnel.
Known for her adventurous spirit, Fox had participated in several high-profile competitions, including the annual Escape from Alcatraz triathlon. Described as a “cheerful, bubbly, funny” individual, her contributions to the swimming community were significant. “She lived her life fully,” her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, expressed in a statement to local media.
The local community is mourning her loss. Pacific Grove Mayor Nick Smith extended condolences, stating, “When a tragedy like this occurs in a small town, it is deeply felt throughout our entire community.” A heartfelt tribute shared on social media by recovery diver Juan Heredia captured the emotional response from her friends and family, emphasizing Fox’s lasting impact: “Swim gently, beautiful soul. The ocean keeps your soul now.”
As investigations continue, officials urge swimmers to remain vigilant given the potential risks of ocean waters. The shocking circumstances surrounding Erica Fox’s death serve as a sobering reminder of the ocean’s unpredictable nature and the inherent dangers of marine life.
Stay tuned for updates as authorities continue their investigation into this tragic incident.
