Five Arrested in Bristol Protest: Police Confirm Origins

UPDATE: Five individuals have been arrested during a protest in Bristol yesterday, with police confirming none are local residents. The arrests occurred amidst clashes between an anti-immigration group known as the ‘Bristol Patriots’ and a significant counter-protest by anti-fascist activists.

The protests unfolded at 1 PM on November 16, 2025, at Redcliff Hill, where a sizable crowd had already gathered to oppose the Bristol Patriots. The situation escalated, leading to five arrests, as confirmed by Avon & Somerset Police.

Among the arrested, a 22-year-old man from Cornwall, a 25-year-old man from Richmond-upon-Thames, and two men, aged 20 and 43, from Portsmouth were detained for various offenses related to assaulting emergency workers. A 37-year-old woman from London was also arrested for failing to provide her details when requested. All individuals have been released on conditional bail.

Authorities report ongoing investigations into the protest incidents, particularly focusing on other assaults against police officers at the scene. One officer was taken to the hospital for injuries but has since been discharged.

Chief Inspector Keith Smith expressed disappointment over the disorder caused by some counter-protesters. He stated, “It is disappointing a group within the counter protest has seemingly been intent on causing disorder. We’ve made several arrests and ordered a number of counter-protesters to leave central Bristol.”

The protest drew notable figures, including Nick Tenconi, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party, who made headlines with conflicting remarks about Bristol, calling it both a “communist run hell-hole” and a “wonderful town.”

As the situation develops, police will continue to monitor the aftermath of these protests. Authorities emphasize that the safety of their officers is a priority, ensuring that those responsible for assaults will face justice.
