Glasgow Subway Fares Surge in New Year: Key Increases Announced

URGENT UPDATE: Glasgow Subway fares and park and ride fees are set to increase starting January 5, 2024. This significant rise in costs has been confirmed by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), impacting daily commuters and occasional travelers alike.

Beginning next week, adults using a Smartcard will see single journey fares climb by 15p to £1.80. Meanwhile, daily adult fares using the Smartcard, which allows for unlimited travel within the day, will also rise by 20p to £3.40. Child fares will increase by 5p, affecting families across Glasgow.

In addition to fare changes, SPT has announced a series of other price hikes. Weekly adult Subway season tickets will increase by 50p, while the 28-day season ticket will now cost £55 online and £60 when purchased at stations. The six-month ticket will see a rise of £10, and the adult annual ticket will now cost £15 more.

The price adjustments extend to park and ride facilities as well. Short-term parking fees at Bridge Street, Shields Road, and Kelvinbridge will also rise. Prices will go up by 5p for 30 minutes and for one hour, while parking for two hours will increase by 10p.

This fare increase is expected to impact thousands of daily commuters, many of whom rely on the Subway for their work and travel needs. The changes, approved by the SPT Partnership Board, come at a time when many are already grappling with rising living costs.

As commuters prepare for these changes, questions arise about the impact on public transportation usage and overall accessibility in Glasgow. Residents are urged to stay informed about these developments and consider their travel plans for the New Year.
