Leeds Fan Banned for Three Years Over Offensive Tragedy Chants

UPDATE: A man has been banned from attending football matches for three years after making offensive tragedy chants during the Leeds United vs. Liverpool match on December 6, 2025. Nicholas Harpur, 23, from Flint Lane, Melling, was sentenced at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on January 5, pleading guilty to a public order offence.

During the match, Harpur was involved in a disturbing incident where chants referencing a tragic event in Istanbul, which resulted in the deaths of two Leeds United fans, were directed at rival supporters. This behavior has drawn widespread condemnation from authorities and fans alike.

Police were already present in the away fans’ coach park when the incident escalated, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance at sporting events. Harpur’s actions are not just a breach of conduct; they are emblematic of a deeper issue within sports culture that many seek to eradicate.

Chief Inspector Pete Hall, match commander for the fixture, stated,

“We know that the vast majority of fans don’t want to see this type of behaviour which is highly offensive and can cause genuine distress to those affected by the incidents that these tragedy chants refer to. Directing chants, comments or gestures such as this at rival fans has no place in football.”

In addition to the ban, Harpur was fined £800, ordered to pay a £320 victim surcharge, and cover £85 in costs. The ruling aims to send a clear message: such behavior will not be tolerated, and offenders will face strict consequences.

The incident has sparked discussions about the need for stricter enforcement of bans and a collective effort from clubs and law enforcement to foster a more respectful atmosphere at matches. Authorities are committed to working closely with clubs to ensure that any similar offences are thoroughly investigated.

As officials continue to address this pressing issue, fans are urged to uphold the spirit of the game and report any such behavior they witness. The football community is watching closely, and further actions may follow as part of a broader initiative to enhance matchday experiences for all supporters.
