UPDATE: New data reveals a significant surge in livestock numbers across Montenegro as of December 1, 2025. The latest figures from Monstat indicate a notable increase in cattle, sheep, and pigs, marking a vital development for the agricultural sector.
Authorities confirm a total of 68,481 cattle, reflecting a 1.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, the population of dairy cows has risen by 2.1 percent, demonstrating a strengthening dairy industry.
In the sheep farming sector, statistics show an impressive 8.2 percent rise in total sheep numbers, signaling a positive trend for local farmers. Meanwhile, the pig population has surged by an astonishing 13.4 percent, bringing the total to 33,179 pigs, a significant boost for meat production.
The total poultry population also reflects growth, with chicken numbers increasing by 14.2 percent, totaling 1.03 million hens. This rise correlates with a steady demand for eggs, with total egg production reaching 234.03 million pieces in 2025.
The total milk production across Montenegro has reached 163.6 million liters, with cow’s milk constituting the majority at 93.6 percent. Each cow is producing an average of 3.524 liters of milk. Additionally, the total wool production stands at 226 tons.
These findings are based on a comprehensive survey conducted from November 24 to December 20, 2025, which involved 3,574 agricultural households and various agricultural entities. Data collection was performed through interviews and direct data entry via electronic devices to ensure accuracy.
