Man Banned from Driving After Failing Eye Test in Coventry

URGENT UPDATE: A man in his 70s has been banned from driving after failing a roadside eye examination in Coventry yesterday, November 26. This enforcement action was part of a larger initiative known as the Multi-Agency Road Safety Operation (MARSO), conducted under the auspices of Operation Advance.

The incident unfolded when police officers stopped the taxi driver during a routine check. Positioned 20 metres away from a number plate, he was unable to read it, prompting immediate intervention. Officers notified the DVLA, resulting in the swift revocation of his driving licence.

A spokesperson for Coventry Police emphasized the importance of road safety, stating,

“Did you know a police officer can stop you while you are driving and ask to check your eyesight? Under Cassies Law, we can notify the DVLA of the failure, and your licence could be revoked within minutes.”

The police operation is a critical component of ongoing efforts to reduce dangerous driving. In total, over 35 vehicles were stopped on that day across Coventry, Birmingham, and the Black Country. Authorities seized four uninsured vehicles and arrested one individual, while 16 people were fined for various driving offences.

Chief Superintendent Sarah Burton highlighted the ongoing commitment to road safety, stating,

“Our focus remains on targeting motorists who are a risk to our roads and those who commit Fatal 4 offences, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and putting lives at risk.”

This crackdown comes ahead of the holiday season, with authorities urging drivers to remain vigilant. With the stakes high, anyone found behind the wheel after their licence has been revoked could face a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points on their record.
