Man Jailed for Two Years After Police Raid on Cannabis Farm

UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to two years in prison after police uncovered a large cannabis farm with approximately 250 cannabis plants during a raid in Burnopfield, County Durham. The operation took place as part of Durham Constabulary’s ongoing initiative named Operation Drive, aimed at tackling various community crimes.

Officers executed a search warrant at the residence earlier this week, revealing an extensive setup across the first and second floors. The premises were equipped with electric lamps, fans, timers, and irrigation systems, indicating a sophisticated cultivation operation. Additionally, a drying room was located on-site, and CCTV was in operation, suggesting efforts to monitor the illegal activity closely.

Raila Mantas, aged 27, from Burnopfield, pleaded guilty to the cultivation of class B drug cannabis during a previous court hearing. At Durham Crown Court, he was handed a two-year sentence, highlighting the serious repercussions of drug cultivation in the area.

The police raid is part of a larger strategy by Durham Constabulary to address rising concerns within the community regarding anti-social behaviour, shoplifting, drug-related issues, and traffic offences. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary stated,

“Your neighbourhood officers will continue to pursue criminals who try to take advantage where you live.”

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Those with information can contact the police by calling 101 or visiting www.durham.police.uk. Alternatively, reports can be made anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

This latest development underscores the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes in the region and emphasizes the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities. Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue their crackdown on illegal drug operations.
