The owners of the Metrocentre, a prominent shopping and leisure destination in the North East of England, have unveiled ambitious plans to transform a key area of the centre. The Metrocentre Partnership announced a comprehensive refurbishment of The Forum, which has traditionally hosted independent traders and food establishments. This initiative aims to create a vibrant new retail zone called The Crescent, focusing on championing independent retailers and revitalising a crucial link between the Blue Mall and Green Mall.
The Crescent is set to become a flagship destination characterized by a modern, inviting environment tailored for a new generation of shoppers. The proposal aims to enhance the shopping experience by creating a “warm, welcoming space” designed with a village-like atmosphere. This will provide visitors with an opportunity to browse and discover unique brands while enjoying a more leisurely and sociable shopping experience.
Once completed, The Crescent will feature up to 10 newly refurbished retail units and a centrally located coffee hub. The design draws inspiration from charming market towns, fostering a calm environment where guests can shop, meet for coffee, and enjoy a slower pace. New elements will include Victorian-inspired fascias, panelled columns, and hand-painted signage, all contributing to a distinctive aesthetic.
Another significant aspect of the design includes innovative floor finishes and columns that mimic trees, enhancing the feeling of shopping outdoors on a village street. This development is part of a larger strategy by Metrocentre to enrich its offerings and attract a diverse range of retailers, further cementing its status as a leading shopping destination.
The substantial investment in The Crescent follows several recent projects, including the launch of Zara, Stradivarius, and the NHS Community Diagnostic Centre. Refurbishment works are scheduled to commence in early 2026, with the retail units expected to be ready for occupation by the second quarter of the year.
Ben Cox, Director at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, emphasized the importance of The Crescent as part of their strategy to bring renewed energy and upgraded design to the link mall. He stated, “The Crescent is an important part of our strategy to bring fresh energy, upgraded design and a stronger independent retail presence to this link mall. We aim to create an additional destination that resonates with shoppers while attracting a diverse mix of occupiers.”
This initiative reflects Metrocentre’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the shopping experience for its visitors. With the planned transformation, the centre aims to meet the evolving needs of consumers, ensuring that it remains a vibrant and inviting space for both local shoppers and visitors alike.
