Montenegro Set to Close Five EU Negotiation Chapters Today

BREAKING: Montenegro is poised to close five crucial chapters in its negotiations with the European Union (EU) today, marking a significant step forward in its accession process. The Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels is set to commence shortly, with key discussions focusing on pivotal areas such as Chapter 3 – Right to Establish Businesses, Chapter 4 – Free Movement of Capital, Chapter 6 – Economic Law, Chapter 11 – Agriculture and Rural Development, and Chapter 13 – Fisheries.

Leading the Montenegrin delegation is Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, accompanied by Deputy Prime Ministers Ervin Ibrahimović and Nik Đeljošaj, along with Minister of European Affairs Maida Gorčevic, Minister of Finance Novica Vuković, and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management Vladimir Joković.

This move is critical as Montenegro aims to finalize all remaining chapters by the end of next year. Currently, the country has opened all 33 chapters and temporarily closed seven. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently emphasized the importance of these negotiations, stating, “We can now move to the next step with Montenegro, which has made significant progress among candidates.”

The urgency of this conference cannot be overstated. It sets the stage for Montenegro to enter what could be a decisive year, potentially entering with 12 closed chapters. The status of candidate was granted to Montenegro in December 2010, with formal negotiations commencing in June 2012.

Chancellor Merz highlighted the strategic importance of Montenegro’s accession, particularly in combating illegal migration and enhancing regional stability. “The closer we are connected, the better we can act together in Europe,” he added, underscoring the shared interests between Germany and Montenegro.

As the conference unfolds, all eyes will be on the outcomes and future implications for Montenegro’s EU membership aspirations. The completion of these chapters is a promising sign of progress, potentially paving the way for a formal accession agreement.
