Newport’s Tree of Light Returns: Honor Loved Ones This Holiday

UPDATE: Newport’s beloved Tree of Light is set to illuminate the grounds of St Nicholas Church once again, providing a heartfelt opportunity for residents to remember their loved ones while supporting vital local charities. The annual event, organized by the Rotary Club of Newport in partnership with the Newport Town Council, will officially kick off when the town’s Christmas lights are switched on this Saturday, November 22.

This year, Newport Mayor Thomas Janke has chosen the Battle Back Centre Lilleshall as the featured charity. Established by the Royal British Legion in 2011, the Centre aids wounded and injured service personnel transitioning from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, it continues to support veterans and offers wellbeing courses for those in need.

Residents are encouraged to sponsor a light on the Tree of Light for a minimum contribution of £5. All funds raised will be split between the mayor’s chosen charity and the Rotary’s Benevolent Fund, which aids individuals and small volunteer groups both locally and internationally.

A spokesperson from the Rotary Club stated, “The Rotary Club of Newport are pleased to have launched its ‘Tree of Light’ appeal for 2025 and are hoping the local community will again be generous in their financial support for ongoing worthwhile causes, whilst at the same time taking the opportunity to remember a loved one as we approach Christmas.”

The large tree has been erected and will shine brightly with white memorial lights. The names of those being honored will be published in the Newport Advertiser, and a memorial book is set to be displayed in the town library early in the new year.

To participate, residents can find sponsorship forms in the Newport Advertiser, at Ace Computers located at 101 High Street, or at the Newport Town Council desk in the library. A drop box for completed forms and payments will be available at both High Street locations. All submissions must be made by Thursday, December 11.

This initiative not only fosters community spirit but also provides a meaningful way to honor those we cherish as the holiday season approaches. Make sure to join in and support this moving tribute to loved ones and local causes.
