Northern Announces Urgent Procurement for Up to 450 New Trains

BREAKING NEWS: Northern has just announced a major step forward in its train modernization efforts by issuing a request for tender for up to 450 new trains. This pivotal development was revealed during the Modern Railways Public Transport in the North Fourth Friday Club event in Manchester on December 3, 2023.

Managing Director Tricia Williams confirmed at the event that Northern has successfully navigated the business case requirements with the Department for Transport. “We’ve been able to issue a final tender or request for tender,” Williams stated, emphasizing the urgency of replacing the oldest units in the current fleet.

The new fleet will incorporate a mix of electric and multi-modal trains, designed to initially operate in diesel mode with the capability to transition to electric or battery power. Williams further noted, “We will have a small fleet of battery-powered models,” highlighting Northern’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions.

Earlier this year, it was exclusively reported that Northern’s new electric multiple units (EMUs) will be the Class 382s, which are anticipated to significantly enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.

This development is crucial for commuters in the North, as the new trains will not only modernize the fleet but also contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the region. As public transport continues to evolve, the introduction of these advanced train models signifies a critical investment in the future of rail travel.

With manufacturers already engaged in discussions, Northern is poised to make swift progress. The urgency of this initiative resonates with the ongoing demand for more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation options.
