Northern Announces Urgent Tender for 450 New Trains

UPDATE: Northern has just announced a major step forward in its train modernization efforts, issuing a request for tender for up to 450 new trains. This significant milestone was revealed during the Modern Railways Public Transport in the North Fourth Friday Club event in Manchester on 3 December 2023.

Northern Managing Director Tricia Williams confirmed that the company has successfully navigated the business case gateway with the Department for Transport, paving the way for this final tender. “We’re already now working with manufacturers to look at how do we replace the oldest units in our fleet,” Williams stated, emphasizing the urgency of the project.

The new fleet will incorporate a blend of electric and multi-modal capabilities. Initially, the trains will operate in diesel mode, but plans are in place to transition them to either electric or battery power. Williams added, “We will have a small fleet of battery-powered models,” highlighting Northern’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions.

This announcement is a pivotal moment for Northern, as it seeks to enhance its services and modernize its aging fleet. The new trains are expected to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, ultimately benefiting the traveling public.

Earlier this year, it was exclusively revealed that Northern’s new electric multiple units (EMUs) will be classified as Class 382s. This upgrade is part of a broader strategy to deliver better, greener transport options across the region.

As the tender process unfolds, all eyes will be on how manufacturers respond and the timeline for the delivery of these new trains. Northern is poised to make significant advancements in its operational capabilities, which will be crucial for meeting growing passenger demands.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops, and what this means for the future of rail travel in the North.
