UPDATE: Pret A Manger has confirmed a significant operational shift, announcing it will remove all Express self-service coffee machines from its locations by the end of February 2026. This decision comes as the popular coffee chain, which operates over 700 outlets globally, aims to refocus its resources on expanding its UK retail presence.
The Express coffee machines, launched in 2021, have been a staple in everyday venues including petrol stations and corner shops, allowing customers to enjoy ‘same quality coffee’ as in Pret cafes. However, following an examination by The Grocer, it was revealed that these machines will be phased out, as confirmed by a Pret representative.
In a statement, Pret A Manger explained, “We have taken the decision to end our Pret Express trial so that we can focus investment on continuing to grow our UK shop estate.” The company is collaborating with JDE Peet’s to ensure a smooth transition and appreciates their partnership over the past four years.
By the end of February, a total of 110 Pret Express machines will be removed from UK locations. This change is part of a broader strategy as Pret continues its rapid growth, having recently reached its target of 500 outlets across the UK. New locations in Edinburgh, Redditch, Seaham, St Albans, and Leamington Spa were opened in recent months.
In light of these developments, there are speculations that Expresso Plus, the distributor of Pret Express, may strike a new deal with a different coffee brand, potentially replacing Pret A Manger with L’OR, a premium coffee brand renowned for its 100% Arabica blends. Sources indicate that this new partnership would require no upfront investment and would operate under a ‘competitive commercial arrangement.’
In other news, Pret A Manger has recently rolled out a new ‘Super Plates’ range, featuring larger, nutrient-rich salads across over 250 shops in major cities, including London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Manchester. Launched on July 9, 2025, this new offering includes dishes like Miso Salmon and Chipotle Chicken.
Briony Raven, Chief Customer & Product Officer at Pret A Manger, stated, “With a rise in popularity amongst Brits for larger, more nutrient dense salads, we carefully crafted our brand-new ‘Super Plates’ category. Our range of protein-packed options, made with premium ingredients, are perfect for when you’re quickly grabbing lunch on-the-go.”
This latest shift in operations and menu offerings reflects Pret A Manger’s commitment to adapt to consumer preferences while strategically positioning itself for future growth.
