Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Unveils Calming Garden for Patients

UPDATE: The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has just completed a transformative new garden at the LINAC bunker site, designed to provide a serene retreat for patients, families, and staff during challenging times. This development arrives as part of the hospital’s commitment to enhancing patient care and overall wellness.

The garden is a thoughtfully designed space that offers an essential moment of tranquility amidst the stress often associated with hospital visits. George Glennon, Technical Superintendent Radiographer, emphasized the garden’s importance, stating, “This new garden is such a wonderful addition to our hospital site. It offers an uplifting space where patients and their families can relax when attending the hospital, especially the Lingen Davies Centre.”

This project marks the successful conclusion of the Radiotherapy Department’s LINAC bunker initiative, which aims to improve cancer treatment access. The first patient utilized the state-of-the-art linear accelerator machine in September 2023, showcasing the hospital’s ongoing dedication to modernizing care facilities.

Inese Robotham, Assistant Chief Executive at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), praised the completion of the garden, stating, “It is wonderful to see this project completed and the finishing touches put to the garden which will provide a calming space for patients, visitors, and staff.” This garden is a crucial addition, providing a peaceful environment at a time when patients and families may need it the most.

The LINAC machine is pivotal in treating cancer, delivering high-energy X-rays or electrons directly to tumors while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. This innovative technology works alongside new DoseRT cameras, which monitor radiation doses for cancer patients, ensuring precise and effective treatment.

The completion of this project not only enhances the hospital’s facilities but also represents a significant step forward in patient care. The introduction of this garden will allow for better emotional support and comfort, reinforcing the hospital’s mission to provide high-quality healthcare.

As the hospital prepares for drier days ahead, the community can look forward to utilizing this calming space. The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital continues to set a standard for patient-centered care and innovation in the healthcare sector, making it an essential resource for the Shropshire and Mid Wales regions.
