Scots Boy, 5, Out of Hospital Just in Time for Nativity Play

URGENT UPDATE: A five-year-old boy from Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, has made a miraculous recovery just in time to perform as an angel in his school nativity play. Rory Grant was discharged from the hospital earlier this week after undergoing two surgeries related to a lesion on his head.

Born with a five-pence-sized lesion, Rory faced complications that required an operation on November 5, 2023. His condition worsened following surgery, leading to an abscess that emerged during a swimming lesson. Swift action by medical staff at the Royal Hospital for Children resulted in Rory undergoing a second operation the very next day to clean the wound.

In a heartwarming turn of events, Rory had his bandages removed just a day before his school’s nativity performance, allowing him to participate in the second show after missing the first. His mother, Natalie Grant, expressed immense relief, stating, “We were scared he might miss his nativity, but he is perfectly fine now.”

Rory, a P1 pupil at Stanley Primary School in Ardrossan, was thrilled to don the role of the angel paper boy in front of his classmates. Natalie added, “Being at home with everyone healthy means everything. Rory is hoping to get a bike, a Minecraft plushie, and a Nerf bow and arrow for Christmas.”

His journey began with a CT scan at age two, which revealed that the lesion was only skin deep. Medical professionals had decided to monitor it until Rory was older, but recent irritation prompted the need for removal. After the November surgery, Rory faced further challenges; an abscess popped out when he put on his school jumper, which led to a two-week course of antibiotics. Just a week later, another abscess occurred while he was putting on swimming goggles.

Rory’s family praised the staff at the children’s hospital for their exceptional care and support during his recovery. “They gave him arts and crafts to play with and brought him some games along. He also helped color in for the display boards,” Natalie mentioned, highlighting the hospital’s Play Team, who not only assisted in Rory’s creative endeavors but also provided emotional support during challenging moments, including when Rory faced a failed cannula.

In a touching moment, a professional basketball team visited the hospital, and Rory seized the chance to practice his nativity lines, ensuring he was ready for his performance at school. “The staff were excellent, and I’m forever grateful,” Natalie said. “They were real people who cared.”

Rory’s inspiring story of resilience and determination has captivated his community, showcasing the spirit of the holiday season. As Rory prepares for Christmas, his family reflects on the importance of health and happiness, eager for the celebrations ahead.
