Spaniel Aggie Rescued After Overnight Snow Ordeal on Fionn Bheinn

UPDATE: A resilient spaniel named Aggie has been rescued after enduring a freezing night in snowy conditions on Fionn Bheinn, a peak in Ross-shire, Scotland. Aggie was one of five dogs who fell through a snow cornice while hiking with four walkers on Sunday afternoon.

The Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team was deployed to assist the group struggling near the summit of the 933m (3061 ft) peak, after the dogs plunged “a fair distance” into treacherous terrain. Snow cornices, formed by strong winds, pose significant hazards, making this incident particularly alarming.

While two walkers managed to recover four of the dogs, Aggie remained missing, having fallen into Coire Toll Mhor. The remaining walkers descended without injury and met with rescue team members for support.

On Monday morning, Aggie’s owner, along with three rescue team members and a local estate stalker, returned to the site to search for her. In a remarkable turn of events, they successfully located Aggie, who had spent the night on the mountain in freezing conditions. A rescue team member was then lowered by rope into the corrie to safely bring her back to safety.

Team leader Iain Nesbitt emphasized the dangers of snow cornices, highlighting the importance of caution in such perilous conditions.

The emotional impact of Aggie’s rescue was palpable. Her owner, Lisa Gough, expressed deep gratitude on social media, stating, “So very grateful to everyone who helped get Aggie back to us today. Without their help she wouldn’t be back home with us tonight. Thank you so much.”

Community reactions poured in, with many sharing their relief and joy at the news. One local, Emily Burrows, summed up the collective sentiment, saying, “Tears in my eyes at this! Excellent news, so glad the pup was found and is now safe.”

The Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team, a registered charity composed entirely of volunteers, operates around the clock, relying on community support and donations to continue their lifesaving efforts. They received additional support from the Midge Bite Cafe, which provided hot drinks during the rescue operation.

As the team reflects on this successful rescue, they remind the public of the vital role they play in ensuring safety in the Scottish Highlands. For those wishing to support their ongoing mission, donations can be made via their website at https://www.dmrt.org.uk/how-to-donate-to-dmrt.html.

This heartwarming rescue highlights not only the bravery of the rescue teams but also the strong community spirit that brings people together in times of need.
