Starmer Faces MPs as Trump Criticizes UK’s Iran Strategy

Sir Keir Starmer is set to answer questions in the House of Commons regarding his decisions related to the escalating conflict in Iran. This comes after US President Donald Trump criticized the Prime Minister, asserting that Starmer is “not Winston Churchill” due to his refusal to permit American aircraft to launch initial strikes against Tehran from British bases.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Starmer announced that the United Kingdom would send HMS Dragon, one of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 air defense destroyers, to Cyprus for enhanced security. This deployment follows a drone attack on RAF Akrotiri, a British base on the island. The ongoing war between Iran and the United States has entered its fifth day, and it is expected to dominate discussions during Prime Minister’s Questions scheduled for noon on Wednesday.

In further comments, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the UK’s decision not to allow US forces to use British bases for strikes on Iran, stating in the Oval Office, “This is not Winston Churchill that we’re dealing with.” Despite the criticisms, Downing Street has emphasized that the United States remains a “staunch” ally.

Starmer made the decision on Sunday to permit the use of UK bases, including Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, but only for defensive strikes aimed at protecting nations targeted by Tehran. HMS Dragon is currently being prepared for deployment to the Mediterranean and will be accompanied by two Wildcat helicopters equipped with Martlet missiles, designed for counter-drone operations. The warship, adorned with the Welsh red dragon, was photographed at the Upper Harbour Ammunition Facility in Portsmouth on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans for a Government charter flight to depart from Muscat, Oman, to facilitate the return of vulnerable British nationals. Approximately 130,000 Britons have registered their presence in the Middle East with the Foreign Office as part of evacuation preparations. Although some commercial flights are in operation to repatriate stranded citizens, the majority of departures from the region have been canceled due to extensive airspace closures.

The conflict intensified after the US military killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on March 9, 2024. In retaliation, Iran and its allies have targeted Israel, neighboring Gulf states, and oil production facilities. Trump has also indicated that the US military may begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to protect them from Iranian attacks, a move aimed at stabilizing soaring energy prices resulting from the conflict.

As tensions continue to rise, Starmer’s performance in the Commons will be closely scrutinized, both domestically and internationally.
