URGENT UPDATE: Train passengers are facing an absolute nightmare as Storm Claudia unleashes severe flooding across the UK, causing widespread travel chaos. Heavy rains have led to multiple track closures and significant disruptions, particularly impacting services in Gloucestershire and surrounding areas.
Passengers have reported being stranded for hours, with many unable to reach their destinations. Authorities have issued both amber and yellow weather warnings, effective until 6:00 AM on Saturday, November 15, with more rain anticipated overnight.
Several train operators, including CrossCountry and Great Western Railway, are advising travelers to avoid rail journeys tonight, stating they cannot guarantee safe passage to intended stops. CrossCountry has informed passengers of potential cancellations and delays, urging them to reconsider travel plans.
One frustrated traveler shared their experience with GloucestershireLive, detailing their journey from Manchester Piccadilly. Departing at 3:08 PM, they remained stranded by 8:45 PM, stating, “The train set off from Manchester but got stuck outside of Congleton before being redirected back.” Attempts to reach Hereford were thwarted, leading them to Birmingham, only to find further cancellations to Gloucester. “Passengers are having to get on rail replacement buses. It’s been an absolute nightmare,” they lamented.
Reports indicate that trains have been halted between Gloucester and Bristol due to unsafe conditions, with National Rail advising against travel between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, as well as routes to South Wales and Hereford.
The Great Western Railway network is experiencing extensive disruptions, with bus and coach replacements in effect. Train cancellations are reported as far as Plymouth and Penzance, with many services delayed or diverted.
“Disruption is expected to continue throughout Saturday due to ongoing weather warnings,” a spokesperson for the railway operator confirmed. Passengers are encouraged to check their entire journey before traveling as conditions remain unpredictable.
As Storm Claudia continues to wreak havoc, officials are monitoring the situation closely. Travelers should remain vigilant and stay updated on travel advisories as the storm progresses.
