Sun Country Airlines 737 Strikes Tail During Takeoff, Diverts Urgently

UPDATE: A Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737-800 experienced a tail strike shortly after takeoff from Milwaukee en route to Orlando this morning, prompting an urgent diversion to Chicago O’Hare. The incident occurred at approximately 09:22 AM local time on December 29, 2025, just as the flight was gaining altitude.

Officials report that the aircraft, operating as Flight SY201, ascended to FL270 before the flight crew decided to divert due to the tail strike. The plane landed safely at 10:04 AM, less than an hour after departure, highlighting the swift response of the crew.

The Boeing 737-800 sustained damage to its tail skid but was cleared for continued service after a brief inspection. The aircraft remained on the ground for approximately three hours before resuming its journey to Orlando, ensuring minimal disruption for its passengers.

According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), “AIRCRAFT INCURRED A TAIL STRIKE ON DEPARTURE AND POST FLIGHT INSPECTION REVEALED DAMAGE TO SKID SHOE, MILWAUKEE, WI.” Thankfully, the tail skid, designed to absorb impact during takeoff, performed its function effectively, preventing more severe damage.

The 12-year-old aircraft, registered as N851SY, previously served with Thomson Airways and joined the Sun Country fleet in June 2023. It features an all-economy layout with a capacity of up to 189 passengers.

While tail strikes can pose serious risks, in this case, the damage was minor and manageable. Experts emphasize the importance of proper maintenance and repair following such incidents. If not addressed correctly, tail strike damages can lead to significant safety concerns in the future.

Sun Country Airlines operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet, consisting of 68 aircraft, of which 65 are 737-800s. The airline is also integrating five 737-900ERs into its service, previously flown with Oman Air. Notably, the airline has no immediate plans to place orders for new aircraft.

As investigations continue, passengers and crews can take confidence in the robust safety measures surrounding tail strikes. While this incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks, the quick actions of the Sun Country crew ensured that everyone on board remained safe.
