Suzy Bennett Celebrates Dartmoor Crafts in New Book Release

BREAKING: Award-winning journalist and photographer Suzy Bennett has just released her highly anticipated book, Artisans of Dartmoor, showcasing the vibrant craft scene in Devon. This urgent update highlights the rich cultural movement thriving in Dartmoor, where artisans are redefining traditional crafts.

Bennett’s journey began nearly two decades ago when she first encountered local blacksmith Greg Abel while searching for a curtain rail. This chance meeting ignited her passion for documenting crafts in the area, leading to the creation of the Dartmoor Artisan Trail in 2017. This nonprofit initiative invites visitors to explore local artisans’ workshops, fostering community engagement and appreciation for traditional craftsmanship.

The book, released in January 2024, features over 40 artisans and captures their stories through striking photography. Bennett’s exploration reflects not only the beauty of these crafts but also the emotional connections that artisans share with their work. “I felt compelled to celebrate and document this cultural movement happening right on my doorstep,” she stated.

Bennett, who transitioned from adventure travel writing to focusing on her local community due to climate concerns, emphasizes the mental health benefits of hands-on craftsmanship. “It taps into a part of the brain that nothing else reaches, reducing stress and satisfying our need for self-expression,” she explained.

In preparing for this book, Bennett dedicated herself entirely to her project, canceling her social life and immersing herself in Dartmoor’s artisan community. She found inspiration in the methods of her subjects, like the willow weaver and potter who contributed to her growing network of craftspeople. The urgency of her work reflects a broader trend, as she noted, “While others lament the decline of traditional crafts, I see a resurgence.”

Bennett’s photographic process posed unique challenges, including working in low light and confined spaces. “I love gloomy flat light; it creates soft shadows that suit Dartmoor,” she shared. Her dedication to using natural light resulted in authentic, intimate portraits that capture the essence of each artisan.

As the craft movement gains traction, Bennett’s book aims to inspire readers and artisans alike. “The human urge to create is a defining trait,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of preserving these traditional skills for future generations.

WHAT’S NEXT: Bennett will be speaking at the Bovey Tracey Craft Festival in June this year, where she will further discuss her work and the significance of Dartmoor’s artisan community. As interest in local crafts continues to grow, readers are encouraged to explore the Dartmoor Artisan Trail and discover the talented individuals behind these unique creations.
