UPDATE: In a remarkable career shift, Becky Willis, a former teacher, has left the classroom behind to thrive in the construction industry with Tyneside Home Improvements (THI) in Gateshead. Frustrated by overwhelming paperwork and disinterested students, the 31-year-old educator seized a life-changing opportunity and now plays a pivotal role in a male-dominated field.
Just this summer, Becky was nominated for Degree Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious North East Apprenticeship Awards. Her journey reflects a significant trend of professionals seeking fulfillment beyond traditional roles, especially in sectors where they can make a tangible impact.
Becky candidly shared, “My decision to join THI has completely transformed my life, and I haven’t looked back.” She recalls the relentless grind of teaching six days a week, noting, “I only really had Saturday off, and even then, I couldn’t switch off.” After five years in international schools in the Middle East, returning to the UK was a shock due to the stark differences in student engagement and support.
Entering THI, a company founded by Kevin Kerr 18 years ago, Becky stepped into a role that allowed her to utilize her teaching skills in a new context. The firm, known for its top-notch conservatories and garage conversions, recently won the Best Heritage Installer award at the 2025 Glass & Glazing Installer Awards.
Initially uncertain about her career change, Becky volunteered in THI’s office, where she was encouraged by Chris Green, the commercial director, to pursue an apprenticeship. She is now completing a degree in human resource management, focusing on learning development.
Her research aims to address communication gaps between employers and educational institutions, ensuring apprentices receive the support they need. “I’ve really surprised myself with how well I’ve done,” Becky stated, emphasizing the importance of applying her teaching experience to mentor younger employees and foster their growth.
In her role as a human resource business partner, Becky is responsible for implementing policies and strategies to enhance workplace safety and employee well-being. Recently qualified as a mental health first aider, she provides vital support to staff, encouraging open discussions about mental health. “Mental health is extremely important in the workplace, and it’s definitely a priority for THI,” she affirmed.
Despite being one of only six women among THI’s 28 staff members, Becky has embraced the challenges of working in a predominantly male environment. “It was a little intimidating at first,” she confessed, “but overall everyone has been really welcoming.” Her ability to communicate openly has earned her respect among colleagues.
Chris Green praised Becky’s contributions, stating, “Her drive, curiosity, and commitment to making a difference have been remarkable.” In just two years, she has helped shape a stronger, safer, and more people-focused business.
Becky’s inspiring story is not just about a career change; it embodies a broader movement towards greater inclusivity and mental health awareness within industries. As she continues to grow in her role, the impact of her journey resonates far beyond her own experience, inspiring others to seek their own transformative paths.
In a world where job satisfaction is paramount, Becky Willis stands out as a beacon of change, proving that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
