UPDATE: Two men have been sentenced to a minimum of 18 years in prison for the brutal murder of Stuart McGeachie, who was fatally attacked with a machete in an apparent revenge plot. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Glasgow on October 24, 2023, just moments after a jury delivered a guilty verdict against Callum Summers, 29, while Craig McColl, 24, had pleaded guilty earlier in the trial.
The shocking incident unfolded near a pub on Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen, where the victim was struck once in the neck, resulting in catastrophic blood loss. Prosecutor Bill McVicar stated that the attack was premeditated, aimed at settling a longstanding feud. The judge, Lord Colbeck, condemned the use of such weapons in society, emphasizing, “Their use in the streets of Glasgow are entirely unacceptable.”
Witnesses reported that after the attack, McGeachie staggered into the nearby Victoria Bar, seeking help as the assailants fled the scene. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. It was revealed that the killers had armed themselves with machetes from McColl’s home before executing their malicious plan.
Following the murder, Summers attempted to evade capture by fleeing to Leeds and even sought to obtain a new passport. However, he was later apprehended after trying to escape police by climbing out of a second-floor window. Prosecutor McVicar stressed that both men had acted in concert, despite only one blow being delivered, stating, “The plan was plainly to do harm to Stuart McGeachie or anyone who got in the way.”
In a chilling aftermath, a supporter of one of the killers reportedly made a disrespectful remark towards McGeachie’s relatives as they left the courtroom. This incident has left the community outraged, highlighting the emotional toll on the victim’s family and friends.
As the area grapples with the aftermath of this violent crime, officials are urging community members to remain vigilant against such acts of brutality. The case raises serious concerns about the availability of dangerous weapons like machetes and the ongoing issues of gang violence in Glasgow.
With both killers now behind bars, the focus shifts to community safety and the ongoing fight against violence in the region. Authorities are expected to enhance their efforts to address these critical issues, ensuring that such tragic events do not happen again.
