UPDATE: The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirms very few flights are affected following an urgent software update for Airbus A320 aircraft, alleviating earlier fears of widespread travel disruptions. Passengers can expect a smooth travel experience as most airlines have swiftly implemented the necessary updates.
Earlier today, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) mandated these updates as a precautionary measure after a recent incident involving a JetBlue flight that forced an emergency landing in Florida, injuring at least 15 passengers. The CAA reported that UK airlines, including Wizz Air and British Airways, have acted quickly to address the issue, with minimal impact on travel schedules.
Rob Bishton, CAA chief executive, praised the airline industry’s rapid response, stating, “Thanks to their diligent and swift efforts, UK aviation has come together to minimise significant passenger disruption.” As of now, UK airports like London Gatwick and Stansted report that flights are operating normally, with only minor delays anticipated.
The software update comes in light of the JetBlue incident, where data corruption from solar radiation was cited as a possible cause. Although experts from the University of Surrey Space Centre noted there was no unusual solar activity that day, Airbus has taken precautionary steps to ensure the safety of the A320 family.
In response to the update, Wizz Air confirmed that all affected aircraft underwent the necessary software changes last night, stating, “No further disruption is anticipated.” The airline’s Chief Operations Officer, Diarmud O Conghaile, expressed gratitude to staff for their quick action, ensuring passenger travel plans remained intact.
Meanwhile, EasyJet indicated that some flight schedules might be altered, and affected passengers will be notified accordingly. Irish carrier Aer Lingus reports no expected major disruptions, while British Airways confirmed only three of their aircraft require the update.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander reiterated the limited impact on UK airlines, thanking all involved for their swift work to resolve the issue. She emphasized the importance of maintaining high aviation safety standards globally.
As the situation develops, travelers are encouraged to check their flight status directly with their airlines. With the majority of updates successfully completed, UK passengers can expect to continue their journeys with confidence as aviation authorities ensure stringent safety measures are upheld.
Stay tuned for further updates as authorities monitor the situation closely.
