UPDATE: A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a shocking attack involving fireworks aimed at emergency service workers responding to a fire at a tower block in Knowsley this evening. The incident unfolded at Knowsley Heights on Primrose Drive shortly before 7 PM on November 5, 2023.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after reports emerged that a group of youths were directing fireworks towards the high-rise building. Upon arrival, crews from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) discovered a fire burning on a third-floor balcony. Five fire engines and an aerial appliance were deployed, and firefighters swiftly extinguished the blaze using both a main jet and a hose reel jet.
As firefighters battled the flames, they were met with a barrage of fireworks directed at them. A female police officer sustained a minor leg injury, while a teenager suffered injuries from a firework and was treated by the North West Ambulance Service.
Merseyside Police confirmed the boy’s arrest at approximately 7:20 PM, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody as investigations continue. Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton condemned the attack, stating, “We will not tolerate this type of disgraceful behaviour, particularly when it involves emergency services staff being targeted.”
“We were lucky that nobody was seriously injured,” Chatterton added. Officers quickly engaged with several youths and parents at the scene to address their behaviour.
Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, expressed his shock and dismay over the incident. “I am shocked and saddened that our hardworking firefighters have been targeted maliciously while attending a call-out,” he said. He praised the emergency services for their prompt response, asserting, “Thankfully, the fire was dealt with quickly and all residents are safe and well.”
An MFRS spokesperson confirmed that crews were alerted at 6:57 PM and arrived on scene by 7:04 PM. They reiterated their commitment to community safety, stating, “Fire crews are out protecting our communities and do not deserve to be attacked.” All fire engines are equipped with CCTV, and footage will be shared with Merseyside Police to assist in the ongoing investigation.
This incident not only highlights the dangers faced by emergency workers but also raises concerns about the safety of residents in the area. Authorities are urging the public to respect the hard-working individuals who respond to emergencies, emphasizing that such attacks will not be tolerated.
As investigations proceed, the community is left to grapple with the implications of this reckless behaviour. Residents can expect further updates as police and fire officials continue to work together to ensure safety and accountability in Knowsley.
