Urgent: Arson Attack on Drogheda Refugee Center Rescues Children

UPDATE: A fire at the International Protection Accommodation Services (Ipas) centre in Drogheda, Co Louth, has been confirmed as an arson attack, prompting immediate investigations by authorities. The blaze, reported around 8 PM on October 31, 2025, required the rescue of several residents, including four children, one of whom was a baby.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 8:15 PM, where they found individuals trapped on the top floor of the building. Thanks to the quick response of the Fire Service, all occupants were safely evacuated, though some were transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical assessment.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin responded to the incident, condemning it as “deeply disturbing” and urging for swift action. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan described the fire as an “extremely dangerous act,” noting it endangered the lives of vulnerable residents.

According to a Garda spokesperson, initial reports suggested that fireworks may have sparked the fire; however, investigations now indicate that the fire was started deliberately by unknown individuals. “An Garda Siochana has commenced an investigation into the attempted arson of this residential property,” the spokesperson confirmed. A senior investigating officer has been appointed, and authorities are appealing for witnesses who were in the Georges Street area between 7:30 PM and 8:20 PM to come forward.

O’Callaghan emphasized the ordeal faced by women and children living in the centre, stating, “This was a terrifying experience for those residents, and alternative accommodation is being sourced for them.”

The Irish Refugee Council also expressed outrage, with CEO Nick Henderson condemning the attack as “appalling.” He highlighted that families fleeing from war and persecution were targeted while attempting to rebuild their lives. “If not for the Fire Service, this could have been even more serious,” he added.

Local Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy demanded accountability for the perpetrators, stressing that such actions must not go unpunished. “This attack could have easily resulted in death and serious injuries,” Carthy stated, praising the Fire Service for their life-saving efforts.

As investigations continue, local and national leaders are calling for a united front against such acts of hatred. The community in Drogheda is urged to support those affected and stand against the violence that disrupts their safety.
