UPDATE: A significant fire erupted aboard a freight ship under construction at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Tranmere on the night of December 9. Emergency services were alerted at 8:23 PM and arrived on the scene just six minutes later, deploying six fire engines to tackle the blaze.
All personnel at the shipyard were promptly evacuated as a safety precaution while firefighters initiated their response. Crews worked closely with onsite supervisors to establish water supplies and pinpoint the fire’s origin. Due to the vessel’s complex internal structure, two teams of three firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus, alongside a marine specialist, were sent inside to combat the flames using specialized marine firefighting hoses.
The fire was successfully brought under control and extinguished by 9:57 PM. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) continued their operations, ensuring that the situation was safe before concluding their presence on site at 10:37 PM. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
A spokesperson for MFRS stated, “Crews were alerted at 20:23 and on scene at 20:29 with a total of six fire engines and specialist equipment vehicles at the height of the incident. Firefighters set up water supplies and liaised with the onsite supervisor. This was a confirmed fire aboard a freight ship currently under construction, and all personnel were evacuated.”
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant. This incident highlights the importance of safety protocols in industrial environments, especially when dealing with complex structures like ships.
