Urgent Proposal for 8 New Homes Near Market Drayton Sparks Controversy

UPDATE: A controversial proposal to construct between five and eight new homes near Market Drayton has just been submitted to Shropshire Council. The application, which seeks ‘permission in principle’, aims to determine the suitability of this 1-acre site off Mill Road in Wollerton for development.

The proposal, filed by Peter Richards & Co on behalf of the landowner, has ignited significant local debate. Documents indicate that pre-application advice from Shropshire Council earlier this year deemed the site “considered to be acceptable.” However, the site currently serves as pasture for horse grazing and is adjacent to the historic Beech House Nursing Home, a Grade II-listed building.

The spokesperson for Peter Richards & Co emphasized that the current use of the land is inefficient. They stated, “A modest infill development would represent the most effective use of the site. The scheme would generate economic activity through both the construction phase and subsequent occupation, thereby supporting local services and facilities.”

Despite the potential benefits, local residents have raised serious objections during the consultation phase. Mrs. Westwood, a resident, expressed concerns about increased traffic stating, “Wollerton is a small rural hamlet with narrow roads and pavements that are unsuitable for additional traffic. The proposed development would significantly increase vehicle movements and parking issues, creating safety risks for pedestrians and other road users.”

Another resident, Mrs. Matthews, voiced her opposition, noting, “Wollerton has no local services or amenities and limited public transport, making car dependency unavoidable.” She added, “I do not see the need for additional housing stock. The environmental impact on this rural hamlet would far outweigh the need.”

The application is set to be determined in the coming weeks, with local residents actively monitoring the situation. The public can view the proposal and its details on Shropshire Council’s online planning portal using reference number: 25/04551/PIP.

As the debate intensifies, the outcome of this proposal could significantly shape the future of Wollerton and its rural character. Authorities will continue to assess community feedback while weighing the development’s potential economic benefits against local concerns. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
