Urgent Update: Construction Begins on Cardiff Police Station Flats

UPDATE: Work has officially commenced on transforming the former police station in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff into a new block of flats, marking a significant milestone after more than five years of delays. Local councillors announced on October 28, 2023 that construction will kick off this week, providing much-needed housing in the area.

The old police station, demolished in 2017, was part of a wider multi-million pound regeneration effort in the Maelfa suburb aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and living conditions. The development will feature 41 fully accessible homes, specifically designed for older residents, allowing them to live independently while enjoying communal facilities for socializing and support.

Initial construction work includes piling foundations, which will involve heavy machinery drilling holes into the ground to prepare for concrete and steel reinforcements. These activities are scheduled to take place from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday.

The project faced significant setbacks, including the appointed main contractor going into administration in October 2021, which delayed progress. However, with the new work underway, local officials are optimistic about the positive impact this development will have on the community.

The Maelfa Regeneration Scheme is not just about residential spaces; it also aims to revitalize the local economy by replacing the former shopping centre with a vibrant new shopping area featuring nine shops, new road infrastructure, and a car park with over 40 parking spaces.

This development is crucial for the residents of Llanedeyrn, as it promises to enhance community living and support the needs of older citizens. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, and don’t miss out on the latest news from Cardiff.
