Urgent Update: Rail Service Delayed in Cornwall, Buses Replace Trains

URGENT UPDATE: Rail services between Newquay and Par are facing significant delays as essential signal works continue, forcing passengers to rely on replacement buses. Authorities have confirmed that the completion of the digital signaling system is taking longer than anticipated, pushing the expected return of train services to November 8 further back.

Passengers using the line should prepare for extended travel times. Current arrangements include replacement buses operating between Newquay and St Austell. For those at Par, the recommended route is to take the train to St Austell and transfer to a bus heading towards Newquay. Trains will still operate from Par to Plymouth and Penzance.

Network Rail’s Industry Programme Director, Bogdan Lupu, expressed regret over the disruptions, stating, “We’re really sorry to passengers for the extended delay. Signaling is the most complex work we undertake on the railway and unfortunately we need longer than planned to complete the required testing. Safety is always our number one priority.”

Once completed, this upgrade will facilitate an hourly train service between Newquay and Par starting next year, more than doubling the current service frequency. Passengers will also benefit from direct train links to Falmouth through Par, St Austell, and Truro, marking a significant enhancement in railway connectivity for the region.

Great Western Railway’s West Cornwall station manager, Lee Goodson, emphasized the long-term benefits, stating, “This improvement work forms part of the wider plans to enhance train services, making it even easier for people to choose to travel by train across Cornwall.”

During this period, trains will not stop at Newquay, Quintrell Downs, St Columb Road, Roche, Bugle, or Luxulyan stations. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance by visiting GWR.com, as the ongoing replacement bus services will likely prolong journey times.

As the situation develops, passengers are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for potential disruptions in their travel plans. The urgency of these upgrades highlights the importance of safety and efficiency on the railway, ensuring a better experience for future travelers across Cornwall.
