UPDATE: London Fire Brigade has issued an urgent warning after a series of fires, all linked to lighted candles, erupted across the capital in just four days. The alarming incidents, occurring during the festive season, have raised concerns about fire safety as families celebrate the holidays.
On December 27, just before 7:30 PM, emergency services responded to a devastating fire on Town Road, Edmonton. Approximately 25 firefighters battled the blaze that rapidly spread from a bedroom to the rest of the first floor and the roof. A woman was taken to the hospital, while two others, including a child, managed to escape.
This fire follows a troubling pattern, as just two days earlier on Christmas Day, a fire ignited at a residence on Princes Park Lane, Hayes, damaging parts of the first floor. Fortunately, three residents exited the property unharmed.
Earlier that same day, around 3 AM, another fire was reported at a flat on Elmwood Road, Croydon, where a candle ignited bedding. All three occupants escaped without injury. The series of fires began on Christmas Eve, when six fire engines and 40 firefighters were deployed to a maisonette in Peckham, treating two adults for smoke inhalation after a candle was left unattended.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Arnold emphasized the increased risk of fires during the festive season: “Fires can cause devastation all year round, but this is heightened around Christmas with families potentially left homeless and possessions destroyed. We want to ensure Londoners take every precaution to prevent fires from spoiling the festive period.”
Arnold advised residents to keep candles away from decorations and to consider using battery-powered, flameless LED candles as a safer alternative. He stressed the importance of proper candle placement in heat-resistant holders and on stable surfaces, away from flammable materials.
The Brigade also encourages the public to conduct fire safety checks, whether at home or while visiting friends and family. “Take some time to carry out a few simple checks to keep yourself and your loved ones safe,” Arnold stated.
In light of these incidents, London Fire Brigade urges everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize safety measures throughout the holiday season. For personalized fire safety tips, residents can access the Brigade’s online Home Fire Safety Checker, designed to help identify potential hazards in the home.
Stay safe this festive season and help spread awareness to prevent further tragedies.
