Urgent Warning: Dogs Trust Alerts Owners About Frozen Waters

URGENT UPDATE: Dogs Trust Shrewsbury has issued a critical warning to dog owners about the dangers of frozen lakes and ponds during the current icy weather. As temperatures have dropped sharply, many bodies of water are now covered in ice that is too weak to support the weight of dogs, posing a serious risk of drowning.

Officials confirm that if a dog falls through the ice, it can plunge into freezing water, leading to life-threatening situations. The charity emphasizes that owners must not enter the water to rescue their pets, as cold water shock can be fatal. Involuntary gasping and panic can occur, leading to serious health risks, even for young and healthy individuals.

Dom Burke, Behaviour Officer at Dogs Trust, stated: “While icy ponds and lakes may look inviting for curious dogs, they pose a serious risk to both dogs and their owners. If you’re walking near frozen water, it’s safest to keep your dog on a lead.”

If a dog does fall into a frozen body of water, owners are advised to encourage them to swim back to safety rather than attempting a rescue themselves. In emergencies, calling 999 is crucial, as emergency services prioritize human safety first.

The charity warns that the situation can escalate quickly. “Do not attempt to rescue them yourself, as this could put your life at risk and result in you needing emergency assistance,” Burke cautioned.

As conditions worsen, pet owners are urged to stay vigilant. The risk is heightened in areas like Shropshire and Mid Wales, where many frozen surfaces are deceivingly unstable.
