Wallaby Rex Found Safe Outside Walmart, Returns to Sanctuary

URGENT UPDATE: A runaway wallaby named Rex has been safely returned to his home at the Lots of Love Farm in Williamstown, New Jersey, after a dramatic escape that captivated local residents. Rex, who slipped out of an unlatched barn gate on January 8, 2024, was found outside a Walmart, just one mile from the sanctuary.

The Monroe Township Police Department launched a search after Rex’s escape. They urged the public to keep an eye out for the adventurous marsupial. However, adverse weather conditions hampered search efforts, preventing the use of a drone. Authorities reported a sighting of Rex around 9:05 p.m. on January 9, when he narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle.

Rex was eventually spotted in the parking lot of Walmart by a vigilant mother and daughter duo, who immediately contacted Lots of Love Farm. With their help, he was successfully recaptured. The sanctuary celebrated the momentous event on social media, stating, “Well, if this didn’t become the best night ever! He is home safe and sound! Thank you everyone, you’re all amazing. He must really like Walmart.”

In a light-hearted acknowledgment, the Monroe Township Police noted, “Thanks to our local media, our officers are nationally recognized horse wranglers… but unfortunately, we haven’t quite earned the title of Wallaby Whisperers. Rex is quick!”

Rex, a mid-sized member of the kangaroo family, will take a short break from public view, as the sanctuary announced he would return to the public eye starting January 12, 2024. Additionally, a welcome home party is scheduled for this weekend, inviting the community to join in the celebration of Rex’s safe return.

This heartwarming story highlights the unique bond between animals and humans, showcasing the community’s eagerness to assist in Rex’s safe recovery. The excitement surrounding Rex’s adventure has already drawn significant attention, making it a trending topic in local news and beyond.
