Hong Kong Fire Claims 36 Lives, Search for Missing Continues

A devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong has resulted in at least 36 fatalities and left nearly 300 people missing, according to authorities. The tragedy unfolded late on March 15, 2024, prompting immediate emergency responses from local fire and police services. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu confirmed the rising death toll during a press conference held at 01:00 local time.

The fire, which engulfed an apartment complex housing approximately 4,000 residents, has led to fears that the casualty figures could increase. Currently, 29 individuals are reported hospitalized, with two in critical condition. Reports indicate that residents were trapped in the complex, which consists of eight separate blocks.

In the aftermath of the blaze, about 900 residents have sought refuge in temporary shelters established throughout the city. Chief Executive Lee stated that the fire is now “gradually under control” and has reassured the public that fire services have adequate manpower and resources to extinguish it.

Investigation Underway

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the rapid spread of the fire may have been exacerbated by the presence of flammable materials, specifically styrofoam, within the building. Andy Yeung Yan-kin, Director of Fire Services, mentioned that the fire spread quickly through the blocks and ignited residential flats via the corridors. Firefighters faced significant challenges, being able to access the building only from the ground floor.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang announced that both police and fire service officers are conducting a joint investigation, which may include a criminal probe into the fire’s cause. Survivors have reported that fire alarms failed to activate when the blaze began, leading to further concerns regarding safety protocols in the residential complex.

Emergency Response and Condolences

The firefighting effort has involved over 767 firefighters and 400 police officers who have been deployed to manage the situation. Tragically, one firefighter, Ho Wai-ho, aged 37, lost his life after losing contact with his team while battling the blaze. He had served for nine years at the Sha Tin Fire Station. In addition to the fatalities, several others have sustained injuries, including two firefighters requiring treatment for heat exhaustion.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, urging an all-out effort to extinguish the fire and minimize further casualties. In light of the incident, Chief Executive Lee has activated an emergency incidents monitoring and support centre to facilitate communication between the Security Bureau and the Fire Services Department.

For those seeking information about casualties, a hotline has been established at 1878 999. As the situation continues to develop, the community remains in mourning while rescue efforts persist in the hopes of locating the missing.
