Police Search for Fugitive Following Mistaken Prison Release

Police are actively searching for a prisoner who was mistakenly released while awaiting trial. William Wenham, 47, was serving a two-year sentence and was set to face trial for aggravated burglary when he was released in error from HMP Rochester on June 3, 2024. Wenham had been convicted in absentia of burglary with intent to steal at Cambridge Crown Court on October 3, 2024.

Wenham is known to have connections to several areas, including Havant, Worthing, Brighton, and Peterborough. His release adds to a troubling pattern of mistakes within the prison system, as this is not the first incident of its kind in recent months.

Continuing Pattern of Mistaken Releases

In a similar case, Hadush Kebatu, a convicted sex offender, was mistakenly released from Chelmsford last month. He was apprehended in Finsbury Park following a two-day manhunt. This incident highlights ongoing issues within the corrections system, as two other prisoners released by mistake earlier in 2024 remain at large.

Adding to the concerns, two additional inmates were also released in error in June 2024, bringing the total number of prisoners currently on the run due to administrative errors to four. Further complicating matters, Ola Abimbola, a Nigerian national, also remains at large after allegedly walking out of HMP Ford on October 10, 2024.

Recent Arrests Following Mistaken Releases

In contrast, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, an Algerian sex offender, was re-arrested last Friday after being mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth nine days prior. Kaddour-Cherif, 24, had been serving a sentence for trespass with intent to steal and had a previous conviction for indecent exposure. His capture was facilitated by a tip-off from a member of the public, demonstrating the community’s role in addressing these critical security lapses.

These incidents raise serious questions about the procedures in place for managing prisoner releases. The repeated errors suggest systemic issues that could undermine public safety and erode trust in law enforcement and the judicial system. As the police continue their search for Wenham and the other escaped inmates, the urgency of addressing these flaws in the system becomes increasingly apparent.

Updates are expected as authorities work to resolve these significant oversights and ensure that such mistakes do not occur in the future.
