A significant drug bust occurred in Manchester when police arrested a man after a 10-year-old boy on an e-bike led them to a stash of illegal substances. The incident unfolded on November 27, 2023, around 17:00 local time, when a drone operated by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) unit spotted the e-bike being driven erratically through Tavistock Square in Harpurhey.
The drone tracked the e-bike to a specific address, where officers discovered a total of 94 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin. In addition to the drugs, the search yielded multiple smart whip canisters, a machete, a small quantity of cannabis, cash, and mobile phones. A 21-year-old man was taken into custody on charges including dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
According to a GMP spokesperson, the e-bike was being ridden dangerously, weaving in and out of traffic and even mounting the pavement. This prompted the drone unit to intervene and trace the vehicle’s route to prevent potential harm to the public.
Inspector Dan Pickavance from GMP’s Harpurhey Neighbourhood Team emphasized the growing concern over the misuse of e-bikes. He stated, “We fully appreciate the issues that our communities have encountered with off-road bikes and similar vehicles, from their use in criminality to dangerous driving.”
Community Safety Initiatives
This operation is part of GMP’s proactive approach to addressing anti-social behavior associated with e-bikes and off-road vehicles in the North Manchester area. The local team has implemented multiple patrols and collaborated with specialist teams to ensure a swift response to suspected criminal activity.
Inspector Pickavance noted that these efforts aim to reassure the community, which has voiced frustrations over the reckless use of such vehicles. He added, “This operation has resulted in an arrest and multiple drugs being seized, which is a great result for the local neighbourhood team. We intend to intensify our work as part of Operation North Star over the winter period.”
The incident highlights the challenges police face in managing public safety with the increasing popularity of e-bikes, particularly among younger riders. The GMP’s ongoing initiatives reflect a commitment to curbing the illegal use of these vehicles while enhancing community safety.
