Royal Navy Accelerates AI Initiatives to Enhance Targeting Efficiency

The Royal Navy is advancing its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance decision-making processes and improve targeting effectiveness. This initiative, highlighted in a written response from the Ministry of Defence, is part of a broader strategy known as the Maritime Fighting Web. According to Defence Minister Luke Pollard, this effort aims to better connect sensors, commanders, and operational units across the Royal Navy’s fleet and the wider defence network.

Pollard’s remarks, published on February 9, 2024, indicate that several initiatives are currently being implemented to harness AI effectively. These initiatives are designed to streamline the decision-action cycle, making the Royal Navy more responsive and efficient in its operations. The establishment of a dedicated targeting organisation reflects a shift towards a more formalised approach in the integration of maritime capabilities within the UK’s Integrated Force.

In his statement, Pollard emphasized the importance of developing this organisational structure alongside training exercises with NATO Allies and other military services. This collaborative effort will enhance operational readiness and adaptability. “These include establishing a Royal Navy Targeting organisation to represent the maritime component of the Integrated Force; conducting exercises and training with NATO Allies, Partners, and other Services; and working with the Defence Artificial Intelligence Cell on emerging technologies,” he noted.

The Royal Navy’s AI initiatives are informed by lessons learned from recent conflicts, particularly the war in Ukraine. The rapid integration of drones, electronic warfare, and real-time data sharing has underscored the necessity for effective targeting and intelligence capabilities on the battlefield. Pollard stated, “These efforts incorporate lessons from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and address current operational risks facing the Royal Navy.”
