Stellan Skarsgård Takes on Complex Role in ‘Sentimental Value’

Norwegian writer and director Joachim Trier has returned to the cinematic landscape with his latest film, Sentimental Value, which is set to open in UK cinemas on December 26, 2025. Following the success of his previous work, The Worst Person in the World, Trier’s new family drama has already garnered attention, premiering at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and being touted for multiple Oscar nominations.

The film centers around Gustav Borg, played by Stellan Skarsgård, a once-renowned film director who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughters while working on his next project. The character’s complexity shines through early in the narrative, revealing that Gustav has not always fulfilled his role as a father. This depth made Skarsgård’s casting crucial, as Trier noted in an interview with RadioTimes.com.

“I think he kinda saved us in the writing room,” Trier explained. “As we developed Gustav, he became an increasingly interesting character, which necessitated casting someone with genuine warmth to portray him credibly.”

Trier emphasized that this film marks his sixth feature as a director, and working with actors he admires was essential. “Stellan was, in my opinion, at the top of the list of Nordic actors,” he said. “What hasn’t he done? Before the screenplay was finished, I flew to Stockholm to meet him and tried to persuade him to join the project.”

Skarsgård’s interest in the role was apparent, though he humorously downplayed Trier’s efforts to convince him. “He didn’t have to do anything, but I didn’t tell him that,” Skarsgård said with a smile. “I knew I’d take it because I had seen his films, and the script was beautiful, remarkably light while dealing with significant issues.”

On-Screen Dynamics and Relationships

In Sentimental Value, Skarsgård navigates a fraught relationship with his daughters, played by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. While the character dynamics are strained, the on-set atmosphere was reportedly more relaxed, despite an initial intimidation factor.

Reinsve described Skarsgård as “very funny” and “badass,” admitting to feeling intimidated during their first rehearsal. However, she also noted that this initial fear contributed positively to their on-screen relationship. “Going into it, I respected him a lot. As I got to know him, I relaxed more and more around this mystic being that is Stellan Skarsgård!” she remarked.

Lilleaas echoed similar sentiments, referring to Skarsgård as “a wonderful man” who exhibited gentleness and humor. She recounted a pivotal moment on set, sharing that her first rehearsal involved a scene where she yells at him. “That was really smart because I was so scared before that,” she explained. “It felt like we did it for real, and that broke any kind of intimidation. I just yelled at him, and then we were sort of on the same level.”

As anticipation builds for the film’s release, Sentimental Value promises to deliver a nuanced exploration of family dynamics, underpinned by a standout performance from Stellan Skarsgård. The film is set to resonate with audiences, offering a blend of humor and heartfelt drama.

With a release date of December 26, 2025, cinema-goers can look forward to experiencing this compelling narrative, poised to make an impact during awards season.
